Common Reasons Dogs Lick Their Paws
Dogs lick their paws for many reasons some are harmless, while others may need a vet’s attention. Here are the most common causes:
- Allergies
The most frequent cause. Dogs can be allergic to things in their food or environment (like grass, pollen, or dust mites), and licking is their way of soothing itchy skin. - Injury or Irritation
A cut, splinter, insect bite, or something stuck between the toes can cause localized pain or irritation. - Yeast or Bacterial Infections
Moist areas between the toes are prime spots for infections, especially if the licking is frequent. - Dry or Cracked Skin
Especially in colder months, dogs can develop dry pads that feel itchy or uncomfortable. - Anxiety or Boredom
Sometimes licking becomes a habit to relieve stress or to pass the time when a dog is under-stimulated. - Joint Pain
Older dogs might lick at joints that are sore from arthritis or injury.
When Should You Be Concerned?
