Why Is My Dog Throwing Up?

By Marta Lista DVM

It’s upsetting to see your dog vomit especially when they can’t tell you what’s wrong. Whether it’s a one time event or happening more often, it’s completely normal to feel worried. You’re not alone, and we’re here to help.

At Trail Animal Hospital, we understand how much your dog means to you. Let’s walk through some common reasons your dog might be throwing up and when it’s time to call us.

Common Reasons Dogs Throw Up

Vomiting is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can be caused by something minor or signal something more serious. Here are a few of the most frequent causes:

  •   Eating something they shouldn’t
Dogs are curious eaters. Garbage, grass, socks if it’s within reach, it might end up in their stomach.
  •   Eating too quickly
Gulping down food can irritate the stomach and cause regurgitation or vomiting.
  •    Food intolerance or diet change
Switching foods too quickly or sensitivity to certain ingredients can upset your dog’s stomach.
  •     Infections or parasites
Viruses, bacteria, and intestinal parasites (like roundworms or giardia) are common culprits.
  •     Toxins or foreign objects
Certain plants, human medications, and non-food objects can cause serious issues and need urgent attention.
  •     Chronic illnesses
Conditions like kidney disease, liver problems, pancreatitis, or even cancer can lead to vomiting.
 When Should You Be Concerned?

One-time vomiting with no other symptoms may not be serious but in some cases, it can be a red flag.

Call us if your dog:

Vomits more than once in 24 hours
Is very tired, shaking, or seems in pain
Has blood in their vomit
Isn’t eating or drinking
Also has diarrhea, bloating, or a fever
Is a puppy, senior, or has an existing medical condition

Even if the cause turns out to be simple, it’s always okay to ask. We’d rather you call than worry.

At Trail Animal Hospital, we’re committed to treating your pets like family. If you’re ever unsure, we’re just a phone call away ready to listen, guide you, and provide the care your pet needs to feel better.
