What Should I Feed My Pet?
By Marta Lista DVM
Choosing the right food for your pet can feel like a big decision and it is! With so many brands, ingredients, and opinions out there, it’s completely normal to wonder if you’re feeding your pet the right thing.
At Trail Animal Hospital, we know you just want what’s best for your furry friend. We’re here to help you cut through the confusion and make choices that support your pet’s health, age, and lifestyle.
The Basics: What Pets Really Need
Whether you have a cat or a dog, your pet’s food should be:
- Complete and balanced – Look for the AAFCO statement on the label. This means the food meets the basic nutritional needs for your pet’s life stage.
- Age-appropriate – Puppies and kittens, adult pets, and seniors all have different dietary needs.
- Made for their species – Dogs and cats have different nutrient requirements.
Types of Pet Food
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are the main options:
Dry Food (Kibble)
- Convenient, affordable, long shelf life
- Choose high-quality brands such as Royal Canin or Hill’s Science Diet
Wet Food (Canned)
- Higher moisture content great for pets who don’t drink much water
- Often more palatable for picky eaters
- Can be more expensive and messy to store
Prescription Diets
- Specially formulated for pets with specific health conditions (kidney disease, allergies, GI issues)
- Only available through your vet with a prescription
- Backed by scientific research and veterinary nutritionists
Treats and Table Scraps
- Keep treats under 10% of daily calories
- Avoid toxic foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, and xylitol
- Skip fatty table scrap —they can cause GI upset or even pancreatitis
