What Vaccines Does My Cat Really Need?

What Vaccines Does My Cat Really Need?

By Marta Lista DVM

Whether your cat is an adventurous outdoor explorer or a cozy couch companion, vaccines are an important part of keeping them healthy. We get it figuring out which vaccines are truly necessary can be confusing, especially if your cat doesn’t go outside much.

At Trail Animal Hospital, we’re here to make it simple. Vaccines protect your cat from serious diseases—some of which are contagious, and others that can be life-threatening. We’ll help you choose what’s best based on your cat’s age, health, and lifestyle.

Core Vaccines: The Essentials for Every Cat

These are recommended for all cat indoor and outdoor because of how contagious and dangerous the diseases are.

  • Rabies
Required by law in most areas. Rabies is fatal and can be transmitted to humans. Even indoor cats can be exposed if a bat or wild animal enters your home.
  • FVRCP
    This combo vaccine protects against:
    • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus) – a common upper respiratory infection
    • Calicivirus – causes mouth ulcers and respiratory symptoms
    • Panleukopenia (feline distemper) – a highly contagious and often fatal virus

Kittens typically receive a series of FVRCP and rabies shots, followed by boosters as adults.

Non-Core Vaccines: Based on Lifestyle

These vaccines are recommended for cats at higher risk based on exposure or environment:

  • FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus)
    Recommended for:
    • Kittens
    • Cats that go outdoors
    • Cats that live with other cats or in multi-cat households
FeLV suppresses the immune system and is often fatal. Even a brief encounter with an infected cat can transmit it.

Your veterinarian may also recommend other vaccines depending on where you live or travel.

When to Vaccinate
  • Kittens start vaccines at 8 weeks, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until about 16 weeks old.
  • Adult cats need regular boosters to stay protected—usually every 1–3 years depending on the vaccine.
  • If you’ve adopted a new cat or missed vaccines, we can help get them back on track safely.
