What Flea and Tick Prevention Works Best?

By Marta Lista DVM

Fleas and ticks are more than just a nuisance they can spread serious diseases and cause major discomfort for your pet. With so many products out there, it’s natural to wonder: Which flea and tick prevention really works best?

At Trail Animal Hospital, we’re here to help you choose the safest, most effective protection based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health. Because the best prevention is the one that works and that you feel confident using.

What Are My Options?

There are several types of flea and tick preventatives. The right one for your pet depends on their needs and your preferences.

Topical Treatments

Applied to the skin (usually between the shoulder blades) once a month.

  • Pros: Easy to apply, long-lasting, waterproof formulas
  • Common Brands:  Revolution®, Bravecto®
  • Best For: Dogs and cats that are okay with handling and don’t mind a little “wet spot” after application
Oral Medications

Chewable or tablet taken once a month (or in some cases, every 3 months).

  • Pros: No mess, some start killing fleas within hours
  • Common Brands: Trifexis®, Bravecto®, Simparica Trio®, Credelio®
  • Best For: Dogs that are good with treats or need broad protection (some also prevent heartworms and internal parasites)

Note: There are currently no long-lasting oral flea/tick preventatives approved for cats.

What We Recommend

At Trail Animal Hospital, we usually recommend vet-approved products because they’re backed by research, tested for safety, and typically more effective than over-the-counter options.

We’ll help you choose based on:

  • Your pet’s species, weight, and age
  • Any health conditions or medications they’re taking
  • Your environment (ticks are more common in some areas)
  • Whether your pet spends time outdoors, at daycare, or around other animals
When to Use Prevention

Year-round prevention is key. Even in cooler months, fleas can live indoors, and ticks can show up during unexpected warm spells. A consistent routine is the best way to avoid infestations and the health issues that come with them.

We’re happy to walk you through the options and recommend something safe and effective whether you have a tiny kitten, a senior dog, or anything in between.
